vertigo city was glowing bright against a january sky, a thousand city lights shining like earthbound stars. snow fell softly as the streetlights painted the sky rose gold and she didn't even care that she hadn't seen a real star since they'd moved here. someone somewhere having a fire and she could smell the woodsmoke in the crisp night air. someone was probably up in heaven watching her now. probably up there shaking their head and writing disappointed things on a clipboard in the kind of archaic and finicky handwriting that hadn't been seen since the printing press was invented. the first letter of the (scathing. it would definitely be scathing) report was probably set off in a neat little square, roses and skyscrapers coiling and jutting around it as it kicked off a sentence about the way catalina was shirking her duty tonight.
okay, fine. she was shirking. but she was halfway to fallen and paired with a lost cause of a human and she was beginning to think the whole thing was probably rigged from the beginning and they'd been set up to sabotage each other and that kind of thing tended to make for very long days. so. she was shirking. besides, bryce was making pasta. nothing damning about that, short of using the letters in the alphagetti to spell out cuss words and write the kind of latin you don't want to read out loud. she was pretty sure he didn't know that kind of latin.
but even if he did, the whole world had gone quiet and still tonight, so . . . she stuck out her tongue and caught another flake. shirkers gonna shirk.
